Before i give a reason of why our mind belongs to us , i would like to hear a reason why itdoesn't belong to us. And i'm not directing this question at yusuf only.
Due to outside influence. We may not realize it but all of us are greatly influenced by media and the opinions of others (including family). If you believe in something and your friend doesn't, wouldn't eventually one of you change your mind? So that now their opinions and beliefs become yours and they influence your mind, or vise versa.
Yes our minds do belong to us. We make the decisions that affect our lives, although people may argue that there are outside influences that affect our decisions, I don't believe that any form of media or some outside influence can make me do something I don't want to do or wouldn't normally do.
Referring to robin's comment, our decision reflect our beliefs and values. Our beliefs and values are shaped by outside influences and experiences from birth. Our outlook on the world is based on our experiences is life and our decisions reflect that. Our thoughts may be ours but they are constantly subjected to and under the pressure of external factors.
i believe that in the end our minds belong to us. To have ownership is to control and there's only one person who can control your mind and that's you. The media and family are primary influences and its inevitable that we be affected to some extent by what we take in, but i agree with Robin, in the end it's you who chooses.
